Nel 1987, aveva ormai abbandonato la sua vita ricca di eccessi. Difatti non partecipò più a concerti live, dicendo che un uomo di 40 anni non poteva saltare con una calzamaglia indosso, non volendo dichiarare pubblicamente di avere l'AIDS; alcune testate scandalistiche cominciavano a sospettare che qualcosa non andasse.

Si fecero sempre più rare le apparizioni pubbliche, ed egli visse sempre più nella sua villa a Kensington. Freddie nascose il terribile segreto della sua malattia anche agli altri membri dei Queen, per evitare che si potessero preoccupare per lui, impedendogli di cantare.

Il canto, infatti, era la cosa che più gli dava sollievo, e così dall'Inghilterra si trasferì in Svizzera a Montreux, dove acquistò una villa sul lago, nella quale incise alcune tra le più intense canzoni dei Queen. Cantò quasi fino alla fine, fece l'impossibile per i suoi fan, spesso, facendosi pregare di smettere dagli altri componenti del gruppo, ma la musica e l'amore della gente erano le cose più importanti per lui.

Rientrò in Inghilterra pochi mesi prima della fine, per stare vicino ai suoi cari. Solo 24 ore prima dell'annuncio della sua morte era stato diffuso un comunicato stampa con l'ammissione di avere l'AIDS:

"Desidero confermare che sono risultato sieropositivo, ho l'AIDS. Ho ritenuto opportuno tenere riservata questa informazione fino a questo momento allo scopo di proteggere la privacy di quanti mi stanno intorno. Tuttavia, è arrivato il momento che i miei amici e i miei fans in tutto il mondo conoscano la verità. Spero che tutti si uniranno a me, ai miei dottori e a quelli del mondo intero nella lotta contro questa tremenda malattia."

Il sipario cala alle 18:48 di domenica 24 novembre 1991. Morì nella sua casa ed il suo corpo, cremato, è conservato dalla famiglia (un'altra tesi ritiene le ceneri disperse nel lago di Ginevra, davanti alla "sua" Montreux). Il suo funerale ebbe luogo in forma privata secondo le usanze zoroastriane.

Un vero e proprio capolavoro, scritto dal grande freddie... molte persone si specchiano in questa canzone, davvero molto triste... soprattutto se ascoltata in wembley '86... ditemi voi che ne pensate... e se vi fa piacere lasciate qualche citazione dei queen, verrà inserita nell'elenco frasi con un riconoscimento (se non c'è di già)..

 20 aprile 1992: allo stadio di Wembley si svolge il più grande concerto degli ultimi anni, il "Freddie Mercury Tribute". Vincendo la disperazione, Brian, Roger e John salgono sullo stesso palco per l'ultima volta, per celebrare la vita e l'arte di Freddie Mercury in compagnia dei più importanti nomi del panorama rock mondiale. Il concerto viene aperto dalle esibizioni di Extreme, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard e Bob Geldof. Alle sei di sera è il turno di Brian, Roger e John: una schiera di straordinari artisti si unisce a loro per cantare le canzoni dei Queen ed esprimere le proprie considerazioni su Freddie Mercury e sull'Aids. George Michael, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Mick Ronson, lan Hunter, Annie Lennox e molti altri altri danno vita a un concerto leggendario, trasmesso in diretta in tutta Europa. David Bowie canta forse per l'ultima volta Heroes e al termine del pezzo si inginocchia e recita una preghiera per tutte le vittime dell'Aids, riducendo al silenzio l'intero stadio. La serata si chiude con una splendida interpretazione di We Are The Champions da parte di Liza Minnelli cui si uniscono tutti gli artisti presenti per un grande coro finale. Sull'ultima nota Roger Taylor, vero motore dell'evento, prende in mano il microfono e grida al cielo di Londra:

La qualità della sua vita era cambiata così drammaticamente e ogni giorno che passava soffriva sempre di più. Perdeva la vista. Il suo corpo si indeboliva a causa delle convulsioni. Fu così penoso vederlo peggiorare a quel modo. Un giorno decise che ne aveva abbastanza e smise di prendere i farmaci che lo tenevano in vita. Spense la luce.
